Why Order Matters
The golden rule of skincare layering is simple: thin to thick. Lightweight products are applied first so they can penetrate the skin, while thicker products seal everything in.
The Correct Order
Oil cleanser / cleansing balm — dissolves SPF, makeup, and sebum
Water-based cleanser — removes remaining impurities
Toner — rebalances pH and preps skin for actives
Water-based serums — vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid
Eye cream — the delicate eye area needs targeted treatment
Moisturizer — locks in all previous layers
Face oil (evening only) — seals and repairs overnight
SPF (morning only) — always the final step in your AM routine
The Biggest Mistakes
Mixing vitamin C and niacinamide: This was once considered a problem but modern formulations work fine together. Don't worry about it.
Applying retinol on wet skin: Always apply retinol to dry skin — moisture dramatically increases absorption and can cause irritation.
Skipping SPF: Every single active ingredient you apply — vitamin C, retinol, AHAs — makes your skin more sun-sensitive. SPF is non-negotiable.
